Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM)
A Notice of Intended Marriage Form must be lodged within 18 months and not less than one calendar month and one day from the date the marriage is due to take place. (I will arrange this for you at your second consultation. I must sight your original birth certificate or birth extract. (If you were born overseas, an overseas passport is acceptable.) If you have been divorced or widowed, a divorce certificate or death certificate must be produced. Original certified copies of certificates are also acceptable. I must also sight photo identification at this meeting.
The Declaration
You will both also be required to sign a statutory declaration before me stating that you know of no legal impediment to you getting married.
Marriage Certificate
The Marriage Certificate is signed during the ceremony in the presence of two witnesses – aged over 18 years. This is then lodged with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages after the ceremony. A commemorative certificate is also signed and presented on the day.
Certified Certificate of Marriage from the Registry
If you are changing your name, you will need to obtain a certified 'Certificate of Marriage' which can be applied for from the Victoria Government's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages after the ceremony. See Links
